Each department has the option to alter the requirements for Honors in the Major, as long as the stated minimums remain in effect.
Below, you will find the things you need to know about how Honors in the Major works in your department.
- Students who seek Honors in Classics will write a thesis that explores a particular
topic, question, or problem related to classical studies. In the thesis, students
are expected to pursue their topic in far greater depth than they would for
a normal course paper. The thesis should exhibit their control of both the ancient
sources related to their topic and the relevant modern scholarship.
- The course you register for, for Honors Thesis
credit, is CLA4909r,
Honors Work.
- You are allowed and must complete six hours of Honors thesis credit.
- All six hours MAY count, but they are usually in addition to major requirements.
- At the end of each term, the major professor will meet with and discuss the
progress of the student and the quality of early drafts, and a grade will be
awarded on the basis of that professor's evaluation..
- There are no completion requirements beyond a successfully defended thesis.
- Students are encouraged to make plans for Honors in the Major work in
Classics well in advance. Students should meet with Dr. John Marincola to discuss the program at their earliest convenience.
