Each department has the option to alter the requirements for Honors in the Major, as long as the stated minimums remain in effect.
Below, you will find the things you need to know about how Honors in the Major works in your department.
- Students, under the direction of a faculty supervisor, can choose to
complete either a research-based thesis or creative project. The thesis/project
should involve or explore some aspect of either human or mediated communication.
The ideal honors thesis/project will synthesize the knowledge gained in major
coursework with the student's specific research or creative interests.
- The course you register for, for Honors Thesis credit,
is COM4909r,
Honors Work in Communication.
- Students pursuing Honors in the Major are required to complete a minimum
of six (and a maximum of nine, not including COM4937) hours of thesis work.
- Students should check with their advisor to find out how many of these
thesis hours count toward the major.
- Grading of work in progress is up to the discretion of the Thesis Director.
- We offer COM4937 (Honors Preparatory Seminar in Communication) to help
prepare students for Honors in the Major work. However, this course is not
required to complete Honors in the Major work in Communication.
- Students are encouraged to make plans for Honors in the Major work in
Communication well in advance. Students should meet with Professor Steven McClung to discuss the program at their earliest convenience.
