Each department has the option to alter the
requirements for Honors in the Major, as long as the stated minimums remain in
effect.
Below, you will find the things you need to know about how Honors in the Major
works in your department.
- The goal is to get the best and brightest undergraduate
students involved in research group activities. There are three specific
goals involved: (1)
Introduce
students to the research process; (2) Familiarize and immerse students
in a specific research area; (3) Encourage and prepare these students for
graduate
work. There is no requirement for a thesis or project for any undergraduate
major in the Computer Science department. Honors in the Major goes above
and
beyond usual expectations.
- The course you register for,
for Honors Thesis credit, is CIS4933r,
Honors Work.
- Students pursuing Honors in the Major typically take
six hours of thesis credit, 3 hours in each of 2 consecutive semesters.
- Six of these thesis hours count toward major requirements.
- Grading of work in progress is up to the discretion of
the Thesis Director.
- There are no requirements beyond successful completion
of the Honors Thesis for graduation With Honors in Computer Science.
- There are several research laboratories in the Computer
Science Department that provide an ideal environment for undergraduate research.

- Students are encouraged to make plans for Honors in the
Major work in Computer Science well in advance. Students should meet with
Professor Ashok Srinivasan to discuss the program at their earliest convenience.
