Each department has the option to alter the
requirements for Honors in the Major, as long as the stated minimums remain in
effect.
Below, you will find the things you need to know about how Honors in the Major
works in your department.
- Honors thesis work
in English is by invitation-only. Eligible students will receive
an invitation from the Director of the English Department Honors Program.
- Students complete a research or creative writing manuscript of their
own design. In length, the thesis represents the most sustained written assignment
in the
student's academic career.
- The course you register for, for Honors Thesis credit, is ENG4936r,
Honors Thesis.
- Students must complete their project in 6 semester hours of thesis credit.
- All six of these thesis hours can count toward major requirements.
- Generally, a grade of 'I' (Incomplete) is assigned for semesters in which
the project is not completed. Once the student has defended successfully,
the grade received for the defense will be retroactively fitted to earlier
semesters.
- In order to be eligible
to undertake an Honors thesis project, native FSU students must have
a 3.75 minimum cumulative GPA and transfer students must also have a
GPA of at least 3.75 from their former schools.
- In addition to the six thesis hours, Honors students take two special
seminars open only to Honors students. Three of these hours count toward
major requirements,
and three toward elective requirements.
- Students are encouraged to make plans for Honors in the Major work in
English well in advance. Students should meet with Professor Andrew Epstein to discuss the program at their earliest convenience.
