Each department has the option to alter the
requirements for Honors in the Major, as long as the stated minimums remain in
effect.
Below, you will find the things you need to know about how Honors in the Major
works in your department.
-
The Political Science Department usually requires far more reading of the
professional literature in a given area than is regularly required in the
major curriculum, and an independent research project, usually involving the
statistical analysis of data.
- The course you register for, for Honors Thesis credit, is POS4935r,
Honors Work.
- Students usually take six hours of Honors Thesis credit, typically
over two semesters, to graduate With Honors.
- Usually all the credits can count toward the 30 needed for the major.
However, students must have at least 21 hours in classroom-based courses.
Thus, if
a student took both an internship for 6 hours and Honors in the Major
for 6 hours, only 9 of these non-classroom hours would count. Alternatively,
the
student who took both an internship and Honors in the Major would need
a minimum of 33 hours of Political Science courses to meet the major requirements.
- Grades for work in progress are assigned at the discretion of the Thesis Director. In most cases, an 'I' (Incomplete) is assigned for the first
semester
of work.
- Students are encouraged to make plans for Honors in the Major work in
Political Science well in advance. Students should meet with Dr. Christopher Reenock to discuss the program at their earliest convenience.
